GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP TO RELEASE NEW EP “SEX VID SINGLES CLUB” THIS OCTOBER OUTRAGEOUS NYC BAND SET TO “CHANGE OPINIONS”, OFFER ALTERNATIVE TO “MAINSTREAM IDENTITY”
Polarizing NYC hardcore punk band GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP (also GFJD) will release its new EP Sex Vid Singles Club on October 12 via Shinebox Recordings.
Birthed in Brooklyn, “with no regard for potential audiences” and the intent of “doing everything on its own terms,” GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP has met to every response but indifference since the release of its debut EP Erotically Charged Dance Songs for the Desperate (2004). The debut showcased the band’s machine gun rat-a-tat fire of short, sharp songs delivered in a frantic, relentless style featuring “a very well hidden yet deeply intellectual core” and lead singer Marty Leopard’s vocals that “straddled the line between Johnny Rotten and a hyena.” The 5-track EP met with extremely positive reviews which often compared GFJD to fellow hardcore bands The Refused, The Blood Brothers and The Locust. The band quickly sold through the EP’s 2000 copy pressing.
In 2005, GFJD recorded its second EP, Blood: The Natural Lubricant (An Apocalyptic Adventure Beyond Sodom and Gomorrah) and released it on the UK label Captains of Industry. This was supported by a small tour of Britain, which initiated such a rousing response that the band was instantaneously invited to headline a stage at the 2006 installment of the UK’s famous Download Festival in Donington Park, a feat nearly unheard of for a “developing band” still in its infancy. By year’s end, the band’s live shows had taken on mythical status – sometimes before they had even happened - and the “Blood” EP sold through its 5000 copy pressing.
When GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP’s debut full length, The Politics of Cruelty was released in 2007, it was received to first-class acclaim; the rare example of a hardcore band receiving positive reviews in publications such as New Music Express, Q, The Guardian and Uncut as well as heavier rock publications such as Rock Sound, Terrorizer and Kerrang!. Instead of featuring the usual biographical material, advance copies of the album sent to the media contained a highly explicit fan letter to actor Johnny Depp, purported to be written by someone simply known as 'Brad'. This approach was in keeping with the band's previous promotional material, which have included bottles of amyl nitrite, surgical rubber gloves, condoms, explicit photographs and further explicit letters from 'Brad'. The album appeared in the NME Chart’s Top 10 throughout November of 2007 and that same month singer Marty Leopard was invited to take part in the NME's annual Christmas Pub Golf (highlights of the evening have subsequently appeared on the internet).
However, in keeping with the band’s anti-mainstream model and anti-marketing manner, the singer subsequently referred to NME and other British music journals as “the enemy,” and when asked to comment for a press blurb, he screamed, “We don’t want to be in fucking NME!” The band’s approach has been consistently unflinching; GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP particularly embraces acrid relationships with rock critics, prominently displaying negative reviews on its website (www.gayforjohnnydepp.com). The Politics of Cruelty received airplay on all the major UK rock radio stations (including Radio 1 Rock Show with Mike Davies, the BBC Rock Radio Show with Daniel P. Carter, Radio 1's One Music with Huw Stephens, the XFM programs Ian Camfield's Rock Show and XFM X-posure and the London-based, international radio station Total Rock) and quickly sold through its 7000 copy pressing.
Now, with a U.S. label home in place, GFJD prepares its stateside crusade and is ready to rock its home country to its very foundations. The October release of Sex Vid Singles Club will see each song on the burly EP accompanied by its own sleek music video and will be followed quickly by the band’s sophomore album, due for release in February, 2011.
The track listing for GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP’s Sex Vid Singles Club is as follows:
1.) Suckcess
2.) Hey Fucked Up! (Punk Rock Can't Exist in Countries with Good Social Services)
3.) Shh, Put the Shiv to My Throat
4.) You Have a Theory, I Have a Gun
5.) Belief in God is So Adorable
6.) She Said, "I Like This One"
GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP is the perfect symbiotic melding of GG Allin, Marquis De Sade, Quentin Crisp, Jeff Stryker and The Germs and their music clearly represents that point at which the nihilism and paranoia of the late 90’s / early 00’s consumer-driven milieu dissipates and gives way to post-recession, pan-international feelings of ‘hope’, ‘change’, and ‘more sex’ for everyone. Rare it is that the innovators and pioneers get recognized in their own time, yet GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP is changing opinions concerning sexual politics, censorship, public indecency, international relations, gender and religious divisions and the capacity for the human ear to accept music at deafening volume levels one by one. At this rate the sky’s the limit. Maybe not even that.
In addition to Marty Leopard, GFJD features Sid Jagger (guitar), Chelsea Piers as “The Hunter” (bass) and A’rab Diesel (drums).
THE FUCKING WRATH SIGNS TO TEE PEE RECORDS CALIFORNIA D-BEAT DEFENDERS TO ISSUE NEW EP THIS OCTOBER
Ferocious Montalvo, California hardcore crust / metal band THE FUCKING WRATH have signed to NYC’s Tee Pee Records. The merciless quartet, whose sound has been described as “an amalgamation of groups such as Discharge, Black Flag, The Melvins and “Kill 'Em All”-era Metallica”, will release the five song Terra Fire EP on October 19.
Delivering a sound-assault that mixes blistering distortion, nihilistic rage, scorching metallic power and fire-breathing vocals mixed with dangerously high levels of intensity, THE FUCKING WRATH do not mess around. Heavy, dark and fast, the band goes straight for the throat, displaying a killer instinct and that is downright frightening. The band formed in 2005, recorded its first album Season of Evil the week of 06.06.06 and embarked on two nationwide DIY tours alongside everyone from Tragedy to Blue Cheer to High on Fire, gaining an army of enthusiasts with each and every live performance. THE FUCKING WRATH now averages close to 150 shows per year with no sign of slowing down. The band will follow the upcoming Terra Fire EP with a full album of new material in 2011.
The track listing for THE FUCKING WRATH’s Terra Fire EP is as follows:
1.) Low Brow
2.) With the Fangs of GOD
